TONY WEDELSTADT LEADS WIRE-TO-WIRE TO WIN FIRST 141 MOD MAIN
by Joe Verdegan and Chris Janda
(Francis Creek, WI) May 19 — Fremont’s Tony Wedelstadt fought off Juneau’s Russ Reinwald in a race long duel to capture the modified feature at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek Saturday, the first here of his career.
A total of 141 cars checked in to do battle. The field included 27 modifieds, 16 Brian Peterson Grand Nationals, 24 stock cars, 28 street stocks, 30 IMCA northern sportmods and 16 sport fours.
Wedelstadt started on the pole but his win was anything but a gimme. Reinwald, who started eighth, quickly worked his way up into second by the race’s halfway point. Reinwald pulled alongside of Wedelstadt on more than one occasion, but was unable to pull off the pass, as Wedelstadt hung on for the win. Reinwald hung on for second, followed by De Pere’s Jay Matthias, Denmark’s Tim Czarneski and De Pere’s Johnny Whitman.
Algoma’s Tyler Hackett passed New Franken’s Brad Lautenbach for the lead on lap 15 and hung on to win his first IMCA northern sportmods feature of his career here. Josh Long of Suamico took second. Lautenbach nipped Brian Bruechert of Kewaunee at the line for fourth. Sturgeon Bay’s Ryan LeMieux took fifth.
Milwaukee’s Dan Schumacher fended off Manitowoc’s Logan Rhode to win the Brian Peterson Builders Grand Nationals feature. Rhode took second, followed by Kevin Damrow of Manitowoc, Don Sorce Jr. of West Allis and Sheboygan Falls Brian Cesar.
Luxemburg’s Tyler Smith beat out Green Bay’s John Heinz and Manitowoc’s Brett Wenzel at the line to win the stock car feature. Oconto Falls’ Jon Couchaine and Pulaski’s Junior Karcz took fourth and fifth, respectively.
Hometown driver Kraig Koehler sliced through the pack from his seventh starting position and fought off defending track champion Danny Gracyalny of Greenville to win the Tisler Salvage street stock feature. Mike Nehmer, George Paul and Kevin Luedtke rounded out the top five finishers.
Chilton’s Shaun Bangart won the sport four feature.
