LACROSSE SNAPS KILGORE’S 141 MOD WIN STREAK – CHAMPIONS CROWNED
By Chris Janda
(Francis Creek, WI) August 24–Green Bay’s Benji Lacrosse made the pass on Green Bay’s Eric Van Iten coming to the line on lap 13 and went on to capture the IMCA modified feature at 141 Speedway Saturday night. By winning, Lacrosse would snap the winning streak of back to back track championship holder Shawn Kilgore of New Franken who had four wins in a row at 141 Speedway. Van Iten settled for second with Kilgore third, Eddie Muenster of Green Bay fourth and Randy Markwardt of Sheboygan Falls fifth.
Track champions were crowned in all three divisions by nights end, with three of those titlists winning back-to-back crowns. New Franken’s Shawn Kilgore, Suamico’s Josh Long and Green Bay’s John Heinz all won back-to-back titles in the IMCA modified, IMCA northern sportmod and IMCA stock cars, respectively. First time champions were Manitowoc’s Paul Diefelthaler (street stock), Whitelaw’s Kevin Naidl (grand national) and Abrams Mike Montie (sport fours).
A total of 109 cars checked in to compete, including 19 Hansel Trucking IMCA modifieds, 12 Brian Peterson Grand Nationals, 20 IMCA stock cars, 25 Tisler Salvage street stocks, 22 Hansel Trucking IMCA northern sportmods and 11 sport fours.
Oconto’s Dustin Loberger and Devin Snellenberger of Pulaski would battle for the lead up front for numerous laps with Loberger getting the upper edge and securing the top shot. Loberger would sweat out several cautions and would come up victorious. Second point sitter Scott Stewart of Oconto finished third; Heinz had to go down pit lane at the half way point and would go to the back of the pack but would charge up to the fourth spot and would win the crown. Jerry Leary of Little Suamico rounded out the top five.
Little Suamico’s Brandon Long took the lead on luck lap 13 over Race Van Pay and Beau Handschke, Long would beat his brother Josh Long for the win but Josh would win back to back track championships. Handschke fell back to third with Kevin Bethke of Neenah fourth and Green Bay’s Mike Dauphinais fifth.
Tim Thompson of Campbellsport picked up the clean sweep in the Brian Peterson Grand Nationals. Milwaukee’s Dan Schumacher second, Ben Stumpf of Brillion third, Terry Van Roy of Darboy fourth and Rick Mahlberg of Denmark raced his stock car with the class and rounded out the top five. Point Leader Naidl had trouble in the feature with a flat tire and went down pit lane but would continue and won his first career title over Manitowoc’s Shawn Schmitt.
In the Tisler Salvage Street Stocks Paul Diefenthaler of Manitowoc took the lead on lap 7 and went on to capture the caution free feature race. By winning, Diefenthaler would be crowned the track champion in his second year in the division. Shawn Haydon of Greenville grabbed the second spot on the closing laps with Jerry Winkle of Oshkosh third, Jesse Behnke of Brillion fourth and Tim Mueller New Holstein fifth.
Abram’s Mike Montie would pick up the win and the track championship by 6 points in the Sport Four division. Jeff Brehmer of Pulaski second, Brian Johnson third and Matt Brehmer fourth.
There will be no racing next Saturday August 31 at 141 Speedway. But on Sunday night September 1 the track will host the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw sprint cars. The fastest machines on dirt will come to 141 and will be joined by the Tisler Salvage street stocks and mini sprints. Last year Fredonia’s Mike Kertscher clocked the first ever 10 second lap on the high-banked, third-mile clay oval with a lap of 10.750 on May 27.
