KILGORE WINS MAIN, SEALS MID SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP IN 141 MODS
by Joe Verdegan & Chris Janda
(Francis Creek, WI) June 23 – Shawn Kilgore of New Franken took the lead on a lap eight restart and fought off Denmark’s RM VanPay to win the modified feature during the Hansel Trucking mid-season championships at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek Saturday.
Mid season champions in all classes were crowned. They included Kilgore, along with West Allis’ Don Sorce (Brian Peterson Grand Nationals), Pulaski’s Junior Karcz (stock cars), Suamico’s Josh Long (IMCA northern sportmods), Luxemburg’s George Paul (Tisler Salvage street stocks) and Oconto Falls Brian Johnson (sport fours).
A total of 128 cars checked in to do battle. The field included 23 modifieds, 12 Brian Peterson Grand Nationals, 21 stock cars, 26 Tisler Salvage street stocks, 28 IMCA northern sportmods and 18 sport fours.
Kilgore, who started in row six, bided his time through several caution periods in the early going. Front row starters Tim Jorgenson of Seymour and De Pere’s Dean Maurer stayed up front through the early caution periods, with Van Pay sneaking into the lead on a lap four restart.
Kilgore ducked underneath Van Pay for the lead on a lap eight restart and was never headed. By winning the mid season points title, the New Franken driver guaranteed himself a track points provisional spot into Clash at the Creek IV 40 lap Badger Mod Tour feature on Wednesday, June 27. Trailing at the checkers were Van Pay, Neosho’s Mitch McGrath, Sobieski’s Sean Jerovetz and Fremont’s Tony Wedelstadt.
New Franken’s Brad Lautenbach charged through the field from 14th and went on to win the IMCA northern sportmod feature. Lautenbach also won the the Mike Hansel Trucking $100 charger award. Lautenbach passed Kewaunee’s Brian Bruechert for the lead on lap 13 and cruised to victory. Bruechert took home second at the pay window, followed by Pulaski’s JJ Anderson, Long and Abrams Scooter Boyea.
Dustin Holland made the long tow from Genoa City a profitable one. The Wilmot Raceway regular captured the Tisler Salvage street stock feature. Trailing Holland at the checkers were Greenville’s Shawn Haydon, Manitowoc drivers Paul Diefenthaler and rookie Brad Laurent, and Mount Calvary’s Brian Vinney.
Green Bay’s John Heinz passed Pensaukee’s Jerry Leary for the lead on lap 12 to win the stock car feature. Leary took second, followed by Kewaunee’s Luke Lemmens, Luxemburg’s Tyler Smith and Karcz.
Division points leaders Sorce and Johnson padded their respective points leads with feature wins in the Brian Peterson Builders Grand Nationals and sport four classes, respectively.
