(Francis Creek, WI) May 12– Oconto Falls rookie Eric “Chummy” Arneson led every lap and fought off a hard charging Kyle Frederick of Gillett to capture his first career modified feature at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek.

A total of 144 cars checked in to compete. The field included 30 modifieds, 13 Brian Peterson Grand Nationals, 25 stock cars, 32 Tisler Salvage street stocks, 28 IMCA northern sportmods and 16 sport fours.

Arneson held a sizeable lead but his margin was erased when a caution flew with five laps remaining. Frederick hung on for second in his best finish of the year. Veteran RM Van Pay of Denmark applied late race pressure to take third. Luxemburg’s Jared Siefert sliced his way from his 16th starting spot to finish fourth, earning the US Bank hard charger award. Algoma’s James Lee Tebon rounded out the top five finishers.

Second generation driver Brett Wenzel of Manitowoc scored a gritty victory in the stock car division, trading paint with seasoned veteran John Heinz of Green Bay in the waning laps. Heinz took runnerup money, followed by Oconto Falls Jon Courchaine, who led much of the race early on. Greenleaf’s Mike Gilson and defending track champion Junior Karcz of Pulaski took fourth and fifth, respectively.

West Allis’ Charlie Sancinani scored his first career win in the Brian Peterson Builders Grand National class. The Milwaukee area visitor most certainly earned his win, collided with defending track champion TJ Smith of Menasha at the finish line as the checkers flew. West Allis’ Don Sorce Jr., Valders Matt Vetting and Manitowoc’s Logan Rhode rounded out the top five finishers.

Kewaunee’s “Flyin Brian” Bruechert brought the crowd to his feet in the IMCA northern sportmod feature. Bruechert, who started 11th, charged through the pack, chasing down race leader Ryan “Rocket” LeMieux of Sturgeon Bay, and passing him on the final lap to capture the win. Lemieux took the runnerup spot, followed by last week’s feature winner Eric Mahlik of Green Bay, Suamico’s Brandon Long and Valders Chad Vetting.

Opening night feature winner Mitch Vandermause of Luxemburg mixed it up with Oshkosh visitor Jerry Winkler in the final laps and came out victorious in the Tisler Salvage street stock feature. Winkler took second, followed by Mike Nehmer, Shawn Haydon and George Paul rounded out the pack.

Defending track champion Ralph Liegios Jr. won the sport four feature.

A pair of nasty wrecks prompted red flags during the night, the first of which occurred on the first lap of the first event of the night. Appleton’s Frank Groeshel collided with Green Bay’s Carl Slack on the frontstretch on the first street stock heat. The collision sent Groeschel on his roof. Groeschel’s car was totaled by his spectacular showing was rewarded with a case of beer from Bottoms Up bar in nearby Maribel.

The street stock feature was halted midway through the event when New Franken’s Dave Baenen clobbered the frontstretch wall coming out of turn four. Baenen was checked out by paramedics following the shot, as he was removed from the battered racer on a backboard. He was conscious and alert following the wreck.

Racing resumes next Saturday night, May 19. 141 Speedway will be hosting the Sippel Open Wheel driving school on Monday, May 21. Spots are still available.
(Vetting, Koehler and Liegois sweep sportmods, street stock and sport four classes)

by Joe Verdegan and Chris Janda

(FRANCIS CREEK, WI) April 21 – Defending Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw sprint car champion Billy Balog of Eau Claire led all 30 laps and sifted his way through lapped cars en route to the series season opening feature at 141 Speedway Saturday night.

A total of 98 cars showed up to do battle in the four class program, including 25 sprints, 32 IMCA northern sportmods, 25 Tisler Salvage street stocks and 17 sport fours.

Balog started outside the front row alongside of Kenosha’s Dave Uttecht during the 30 lap main. The race was red flagged on the opening lap when Scott Biertzer tumbled in turn three, triggering a four car melee. When racing resumed Balog shot into the lead and never looked back. The defending track champ carefully diced his way through lapped cars and sweated out a handful of caution periods.

Howards Grove’s Mike Reinke tried keeping Balog within striking distance but settled for second at the pay window. Beaver Dam’s Jeremy Schultz scored his first podium finish with a 3rd.

Valders Chad Vetting swapped the lead with Suamico’s Josh Long in the final laps but pulled ahead at the checkers, his first division win since the track was still pavement in 2009. Vetting scored a clean sweep, as did Francis Creek’s Kraig Koehler in the Tisler Salvage street stocks and defending track champion Ralph Legois Jr. in the sport fours.

Weekly Saturday night racing resumes on April 28. The modifieds, Brian Peterson Builders Grand Nationals, stock cars, IMCA northern sportmods, Tisler Salvage street stocks and sport fours will compete. For more information call (920) 905 1112. The track phone is (920) 863 3377. The track’s website is 141speedway.com and you can follow the track on both Facebook and Twitter. 141 Speedway is located 15 minutes south of Green Bay on county “R” in Francis Creek.

(WEEKLY RECORD 167 CARS ATTEND SEASON OPENER)

(Francis Creek, WI) April 10 – It might be the IMCA northern sportmod giveaway. Or perhaps the motor giveaways in the modified, street stock and stock car divisions, too. Or, quite simply, Spring fever.

At any rate, based upon car counts at three recent practice sessions, it’s safe to say 141 Speedway’s weekly car count record of 143 (set back in June, 2010) could be in serious jeopardy of being smashed when the hammer drops on the 2012 racing season Saturday, April 14 at 6 p.m.

During a trio of Spring shakedown sessions, 141 drew 44, 54 and 83 cars, respectively. “We were blessed with some pretty good weather for those and that helped out a bit,” said track promoter Bruce Conard. “Even with quite a few guys running down in Iowa last weekend, for us to draw 83 cars I guess we were pretty happy to draw that.”

To compare, 105 cars attended last year’s opening night races. Six weekly divisions will again battle weekly at the high-banked, third-mile, clay oval. Defending track champions include Sobieski’s Sean Jerovetz (modifieds), Menasha’s TJ Smith (Brian Peterson Builders Grand Nationals), Pulaski’s Junior Karcz (stock cars), Green Bay’s Troy Jerovetz (IMCA northern sportmods), Greenville’s Danny Gracyalny (Tisler Salvage street stocks) and Oconto’s Ralph Liegois Jr. (sport fours).

What’s more, 141 has introduced its “Price Buster”, letting all kids 12 and under in free of charge with a paid adult. All other ticket prices remain the same as 2011. Adults are $10.00. Students and seniors ages 13-15 will get in for just $5.00. The Junior Fan Club will also be at the track Saturday nights. There will be children’s bike giveaways every night, and supervised activities are planned each night for young children every Saturday night.

The season’s first green flag flies at 6:00 pm. For details check 141 Speedway on Facebook and Twitter @141Speedway. 141 Speedway is located 15 minutes south of Green Bay on County “R” in Francis Creek. For more information call (920) 905 1112. The track’s raceday phone is (920) 863 3377.

(Francis Creek, WI) April 8 – 83 cars representing eight different classes filled the pit area at 141 Speedway Saturday, April 7 for the third and final “test and tune” of the 2012 “pre-season.” The shakedown session was the final one with the season opener on tap Saturday, April 14 at 6 p.m.

Some drivers made their 141 practice debut for the year, including modified driver Benji LaCrosse of Green Bay and Suamico’s Andy Kleczka in his IMCA northern sportmods.

Other newcomers included Sheboygan Falls Todd King, who was wheeling his Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprinter looking to turn a few practice laps and get an edge on the competition for the series opener, scheduled for April 21st. Close to 30 sprinters are expected to take on the high-banked, third mile clay oval.

Brian Peterson Builders Grand National champion TJ Smith of Menasha was on hand, taking just a handful of laps in preparation of division’s title defense. Seymour’s Kurt Moeller made another appearance too. “We got the car set pretty well at the last practice, and it’s still a little beat up from the Spring Thaw last weekend,” said Moeller. “I’m just here to help Rob (Krull) out, and spend some time with the kids”.

The season opener comes April 14th, with the season’s first green flag flying at 6:00 pm. For details check 141 Speedway on Facebook and Twitter @141Speedway. 141 Speedway is located 15 minutes south of Green Bay on County “R” in Francis Creek. For more information call (920) 905 1112.
